Health spending account

Health and dental expenses incurred but not covered by provincial healthcare or other medical and dental plans, which are considered tax deductible medical expenses by the Canada Revenue Agency, will be considered for reimbursement under your HSA plan.

Eligible expenses include deductible and co-insurance amounts, amounts exceeding plan maximums, and other items not covered by your supplemental medical and dental plans, such as ineligible drugs, vision care expenses, orthodontic procedures, hearing expenses, etc.

To determine if a medical expense is tax deductible, contact the Canada Revenue Agency.

Common questions

Can I re-direct my Health Spending Account payment to my provider (e.g. a dentist or optician)?

No, Health Spending Account credits cannot be assigned to pay a provider. According to Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, credits can only be used to reimburse expenses which have been paid.

Can I submit a claim for my spouse or dependent(s) if they are covered by another plan?

Yes. You may submit a claim for a spouse or dependent with coverage under another plan through mybluecross® as long as they have submitted the claim under their primary plan first.

Can the Health Spending Account reimbursement be sent to me through direct deposit?

Yes. Visit the Update direct deposit in the mybluecross® account dropdown to set up direct deposit using your account number, transit number, and bank number (located on your personal cheque or in your online banking account details). Banking information will be updated within one business day.

CanAssistance, Manitoba Blue Cross' emergency travel assistance provider says they paid all my bills related to my medical emergency, however I received a bill from a collection agency. Why?'

Do not worry as this can sometimes happen. Billing departments are not always located within the medical facility and are often a separate service. As a result, there are times when CanAssistance makes a payment to the medical facility, but this information does not reach the billing department immediately. In the mean time, an automatically-generated reminder bill may be sent to the member. If you receive a bill from a collection agency, contact CanAssistance at 1.866.601.2583 (toll free). CanAssistance will contact the facility and the collection agency and have this rectified. Continue to forward any new bills you receive to CanAssistance, with reference to your existing claim.

Do I need to include a standard claim form with my uploaded claim document?

Only specialty claim forms are required.
